Juror Comments

My process as a juror is to walk slowly through the exhibited pieces, stopping to focus on each artwork individually. On my second pass, I am looking for those pieces which grab my attention — whether by subject, color, composition, technique or some unusual or unexpected handling of materials. I then proceed to the “short list” for closer examination.

BEST IN SHOW

When the Cats Away–Nancy Honaker

This piece immediately caught my attention. The subject matter is the unexpected with a sprinkle of humor. It is technically perfect. The composition is well-balanced. The artist has shown exceptional skill with her limited color palette, The presentation in the custom matting displays this drawing perfectly.

FIRST PLACE

Door at Pleasant Lake Depot–Norma Thomas-Herr

The artist shows her mastery of the watercolor medium in the understatement of this painting. Minimal brushstrokes and use of limited color tell a story of this worn but stately door. The viewer can imagine the entire weathered structure behind this portal. The values are well-balanced, and the use of light in particular holds this composition together.

SECOND PLACE

Sparkler–Janet Wharry

Strong composition and use of color make this small portrait a winner. The figure is well rendered and skillfully integrated with the background. The modeling of the child’s face and arm is well designed with the sparkler as the light source. The values in the figure align perfectly against the solid black.

THIRD PLACE

Harbor Haze: Maine Sunset–Linda Shetzer

This small but powerful acrylic painting  has captured the atmosphere characteristic of late day by the North Atlantic. The strength of this painting is in its simplicity. The low horizon line allows space for the subtle color shifts to render the feeling of vast sky encompassed with rolling fog.
