Juror's Statement

Dani Fuller

Fuller Art House–Sylvania, Ohio

I graduated from the American Academy of Art in downtown Chicago with my BFA and spent nearly 12 years in that awesome city as a freelance artist–a muralist, and illustrator. However, I grew up in Toledo before college–where I took many art classes at the Toledo Museum of Art.

I am the owner of the Fuller Art House in downtown Sylvania. We are the second art gallery on Main Street representing artists both locally and regionally with exhibit openings throughout the year. We also host a great talent for art instruction, workshops, and events. My last name is Fuller and that has become my mission for the space–to experience fuller, love fuller, and give fuller.

I am currently the President of Red Bird Sylvania, co-established with Hudson Gallery on Main Street. I am also the creative designer of Red Bird. Red Bird has become our city’s mascot–building on themes and events throughout the year. This creative concept has put Sylvania on the map as a destination for the arts and continues to grow! With the addition of the Art Supply Depo, we are proving that friendship, creative business practices, and a strong love for community–art can be a game changer and a major economic influence.

You can find me at the gallery or walking Main Street. I love my neighbors and am beyond grateful for the opportunities this community has provided. I have immersed myself in the arts and today I am working creatively in all facets of my life. Thank you for including me today!

BEST OF SHOW

Amaizement–Paula Davis

I chose this piece as the overall Best in Show because of the freedom used with the pastels. The artist had a very strong understanding of the color palette, its use, and the ability to work color for depth and light. This can be seen in the use of purples and blues in the cornstalks –traditionally brown/yellow value changes. I loved the subject, the path, and the emotion in the sky. Great execution, and strong shadows all while remaining playful and confident.

FIRST PLACE

Colorful Harvest–Mike Hill

Overall just strong–details and realism perfected. Gorgeous, vibrant, and skilled.

A watercolor painting of a farm with silos and trees

SECOND PLACE

A Cloudy Day–Kay Kocher

Full of emotion–the blues and grays… well executed. I can feel this setting on my drives to and from Chicago on a rainy moody day. I love the horizon close to the page–nicely handled composition.

THIRD PLACE

Shadows of the Past–Ellie Miller

Nothing stiff about this failing barn. Great talent, great execution. I simply feel the movement and aging barn as if it’s falling down right before us. Nailed it! Great understanding of the medium, too.
