OBSERVATIONS BY OUR JUROR,
SUSAN RUNKLE

This was the third art show I've juried for the Toledo Artists Club. Each time I am overwhelmed by the caliber of talent within the Toledo area. I devised a five-point system and judged each in these categories: use of light and shadow; composition; technique; subject and interest. I'd just like to say again, how impressed I was with each of the art projects entered, and you are all winners when you pursue and create such beautiful art.

Best of Show goes to Janealla Killebrew for her watercolor painting entitled Over the Bridge that is Under the Bridge. The angles with their shadows and colorful open spaces, the composition and the fullness of the image are extraordinary.

First Place goes to Ellie Miller for her watercolor This Old House. Ellie got everything right when she made this painting. It is really interesting and well done.

Second Place goes to Stephen Mockensturm for his oil painting Goddess. This oil painting is so tight, the colors beautiful, the subject interesting, and the light on its' still life seems to radiate off the canvas.

Third place goes to Paul Brand for his charcoal drawing Afternoon, Swan Creek. We are so blessed to have many natural areas being preserved by the Toledo Metroparks. Paul captured the beauty and the shadows of a snowy spot in his artwork.

The Honorable mentions include Joseph Rudski for his pastel painting Morning Haze; Donlyn Meyers for the acrylic painting Sidecut Park; Trisha Koelsh for the acrylic painting Contrasting Expressions; and William Horvath for the photograph Café.

These were tough choices and I loved Purple Onions. All of the artwork showed skill and creative ways to express the subject, light and shadow. Thank you for allowing me to jury this body of works.
